Mock Draft
Round One

5/14/06

By: Chris Horwedel

1) Portland Trailblazers - Tyrus Thomas (F) LSU

- The Blazers open the draft with Thomas, an athletic specimen who could potentially play the small forward spot in the NBA.

2) Chicago Bulls - LaMarcus Aldridge (C) Texas

- Aldridge gives the Bulls what they thought they would be getting with Eddy Curry so many years back, a true back to the basket center.

3) Charlotte Bobcats - Adam Morrison (SF) Gonzaga

- Morrison may have the highest basketball IQ of anyone in this draft class.  Look for him to be an All-Star within three years for the Bobcats.

4) Atlanta Hawks - Randy Foye (G) Villanova

- While this may seem a little high for Foye, he falls into an ideal situation as he's the perfect backcourt mate for Joe Johnson.

5) Toronto Raptors - Brandon Roy (SG) Washington

- The Raptors find a shooting guard who can extend the opposing defense with his jumpshot, handle the ball and play great defense himself.

6) Minnesota Timberwolves - Rudy Gay (SF) Connecticut

- Gay is a nice fit in Minnesota where he'll be happy to defer shots to Kevin Garnett.

7) Boston Celtics - Marcus Williams (PG) Connecticut

- The Celtics need a true point guard in the worst way and they find one here.  One of the court Williams is a magician, off the court he's a... well, felon in training.  Let's hope the Celtics can straighten him out.

8) Houston Rockets - Andrea Bargnani (PF) Italy

- Long considered a lock to go in the top 5 selections, the talented Bargnari falls a bit, but lands in a perfect spot playing alongside Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady.

9) Golden State Warriors - Patrick O'Bryant (C) Bradley

- The first pseudo-gamble of the draft sees the Warriors going for a center from Bradley, hoping that his strong NCAA tournament play continues.

10) Seattle Supersonics - Cedric Simmons (PF) NC State

- Simmons can play either the power forward or the center position for the Sonics and his athleticism will fit well with this running bunch.

11) Orlando Magic - Rodney Carney (SF) Memphis

- The Magic are thrilled to see Carney drop down some and immediately add him to their talented young roster.

12) New Orleans / Okla. City Hornets - Hilton Armstrong (C) Connecticut

- This may be a bit high for Armstrong, but the Hornets can't pass up the chance to select the athletic center.

13) Philadelphia 76ers - Shelden Williams (PF) Duke

- Williams is a nod to the future for the Sixers.  His blue collar attitude and defensive prowess will be welcome additions.

14) Utah Jazz - J.J. Redick (SG) Duke

- The Jazz see a chance to add a better shooting Jeff Hornacek to the roster in hopes of returning to the glory days of old.

15) New Orleans / Okla. City Hornets - Ronnie Brewer (SG) Arkansas

- Brewer gives the Hornets a little flexibility in the backcourt and he pairs nicely with 2005 rookie Chris Paul.

16) Chicago Bulls - Mardy Collins (G) Temple

- Again, flexibility is the key word here as the Bulls take a player who would fit well in the backcourt with the undersized Ben Gordon.

17) Indiana Pacers - Richard Roby (SG) Colorado

- Roby is one of the better pure shooters in this class and has a wiry frame that resembles former Pacer Reggie Miller.

18) Washington Wizards - Shawne Williams (SF) Memphis

- The selection of Williams provides insurance against the potential free agent departure of Jared Jefferies.

19) Sacramento Kings - Oleksiy Pecherov (PF) Ukraine

- The offensively skilled Pecherov is an ideal fit along with Ron Artest and Brad Miller in the Kings frontcourt.

20) New York Knicks - Maurice Ager (SG) Michigan State

- For a terrible team, the Knicks are surprising difficult to draft for as there's so much "talent" on the roster.  We assume the Knicks look to start over, Ager is a nice player to work with at shooting guard.

21) Phoenix Suns - Shannon Brown (SG) Michigan State

- The suns love to get out on the break and run, Brown and his athleticism is a natural fit.

22) New Jersey Nets - Josh Boone (C) Connecticut

- Boone gives the Nets a big body with some offensive ability to go along with the improving Nenad Kristic.

23) New Jersey Nets - Kyle Lowry (PG) Villanova

- With the second of their back-to-back picks, the Nets can't pass up the chance to add Lowry.  You can't ask for a better player to learn from then Jason Kidd.

24) Memphis Grizzlies - Aaron Gray (C) Pittsburgh

- Gray gives the surprisingly good Grizzlies a little more size along the frontline.

25) Cleveland Cavs - Tiago Splitter (C) Brazil

- Splitter is a little bit like a less offensively talented version of Marcus Camby when he was coming out of UMass.

26) Los Angeles Lakers - Quincy Douby (G) Rutgers

- Douby's a natural fit as a scoring point guard for the Lakers since Kobe handles the ball most of the time anyway.

27) Phoenix Suns - Saer Sene (C) Senegal

- The Suns gamble on the shot blocking phenomenon from Senegal.  His offense needs a ton of work, but his shot blocking will be useful right away.

28) Dallas Mavericks - Kosta Perovic (C) Serbia

- Perovic gives the Mavericks a big guy with the ability to step out and hit a 15 foot jumper.

29) New York Knicks - Nemanja Aleksandrov (F) Serbia

- Again, who knows what Isiah Thomas is thinking.  Aleksandrov is a bargain here and the Knicks would be best off by leaving him overseas to develop for a couple more years.

30) Portland Trailblazers - Paul Davis (C) Michigan State

- Another big guy for the Blazers.  Davis is a talented offensive player who could do very well catching passes from Sebastian Telfair.
